Things I wish I knew when I was 18

I’ve been doing some thinking and there have been several things I wished I knew when I was 18. Things relating to makeup and skincare that I had no clue about and basically messed around a little bit too much with my face, resulting in pimples and closed comedones galore. I’d like to share these things with you, and if you would be so kind, I’d also love to hear about the things you wished you knew when you were 18!

What I Wish I Knew

Things I wish I knew

Dear 18 year old me, you only need sunscreen (SPF 50+), a good concealer and a good powder to set everything with. Now that your skin is older, more pimple riddled and scarred you need the addition of a BB cream to even the colour out. Although colourful eyeshadow, lipstick and blush is nice and fun to play with, nothing beats having clear skin.

Things I wish I knew_1

Dear 18 year old me, you are looking at the holy trinity of skin care. Other than a good non-stripping cleanser, you will need a BHA exfoliant for those never ending pimples and closed comedones and sunscreen (SPF 50+). Sunscreen is arguably the best anti-aging cream available and living in one of the most UV exposed part of the world (other than Antarctica), you should embrace it like your life depends on it – because your face depends on it. You will also need a good moisturiser – but sadly, we have not found one that will not break you out. That is still a work in progress.

Personal Confidence:

Dear 18 year old me, this is still a work in progress but believe me when I say that your self worth is more than what your face looks like. Some days we still wake up feeling like the bottom end of the world, but it’s OK because some days we wake up feeling like a million dollars (although it’s true that those days are far and few in between).

I really wish I knew all this when I was 18 – but in the future, this is what I’ll be telling my daughter.

Self-worth is so important. It can be a struggle for me too, but one step at a time, hey? I should do a post on what I’ve learnt beauty-wise some time. I’ll be sure to link here if I do. 😀
